WBCC Newsmail 67, Vol. 2, November 22, 1997 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Composed with help of several members of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club and published by Martin Peeters, The Netherlands, Focal Point of the WBCC, martinp@concepts.nl -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear WBCC members, Although it was a very emotional week to me, I still send as usual the WBCC Newsmail to you. I hope you read it with great pleasure. So enjoy it all !! 1. New members...By Martin Peeters, WBCC Focal Point We have 2 new members, unfortunally they have no internet connection. Also, please note that my email address will soon change to: matmcinn@leonis.nus.edu.sg 3. WBCC Homepage improvements...By Rod Sell, WBCC Homepage provider I have created a new (Legal Tender) Euro Page. So far only the Belgium and French Legal Tender (2002) Euros are featured. I have also split the A-D page into and A page and a B-D Page. The E-I page has been split into and E-G Page and a H-I Page. These pages now can be downloaded much quicker. 4. The 1997 Jersey set.....Larry Friemel, WBCC Helpdesk A friend has sent me the following, "1997 sets of Jersey coins includeing the new Bi-metallic £2 coin and also both the old and large size 50p are being issued in official blister packs. It is generally understood that the mintage is only 7500 sets and as some coins are unlikely to be issued for circulation this is a very low mintage. The blister pack has an official issue price of £14.95 from the British Mint. The issue of this set is delayed and expected by the end of November." 5. Ilse of Man 1997 Bi-metallic 2 pound..By Larry Friemel, USA I have found these two new 1997 2£ Bi-metallics from Pobjoy for the Isle of Man (Reverse - a race car) and Gibraltar (Reverse - wrestling). The Obverse of each has the standard picture of the Queen. They are part of their new decimal coin conversion. Look into the WBCC Homepage for the pictures: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html 6. United States Mint electroplated Bi-metallics...By Larry Friemel, USA It looks like the United States Mint has entered the production of electroplated bi-metallic coin production. However, they are not for circulating coins -- they are items for sale in their "1997 Holiday Collection" catalog. I guess the plating enhances our otherwise rather drab coins and makes them more salable as Christmas presents. I have been hoping to see the new $1 coin being discussed might be a bi-metallic, however, that appears to not be a possibility because any new coin must have the same physical characteristics as an earlier Susan B. Anthony dollar which failed so it will operate in the various vending machines. In yesterday's paper it is said to maybe be a dead issue even as a new golden colored coin because of political rivalry on the coin design. One political group is emerging stating that they do not want another Liberty dollar, but one with an actual women. But I think what will kill it is the fact that they do not want to withdraw the $1 bill. I think if they do not do that it will not be accepted because we will not have to use it. For a picture look into the WBCC Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html 7. Cuban 10 Pesos 1995 Essai Tri-metallic...By Rod Sell, Australia I managed to obtain a Cuban 1995 10 Pesos Essai Tri-Metallic which is also enamelled on the obverse. I currently have no information on this essai and would appreciate any information WBCC members may have. An image of the coin can be seen in the WBCC Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html 8. A Krupp Techno Bi-metallic....By Joseph Kocian, USA I received a nice Bi-metallic from Krupp VDM Technologies corporation a metals supplier to various mints. The medal is a Hawaii 1959 Bi-metallic, 80th Annual 1989 conference of the Steel Service Center Institute Conference. The Bi-metallic is no longer available. A picture of it can be seen in the WBCC Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7513/wbcc/wbcc.html 9. Finland Bi-metallic 25 Markkaa....By Larry Friemel, USA I just finished reading my Finish Mint NewsLetter and in it I found a little note indicating that the 1997 25 Markkaa Bi-metallic has been released. It has a new design. The obverse has a artistic rendering of a town at waters edge the reverse an artistic rendering of a river scene. It celebrates the 80th anniversary of Finland's Independence. 10. Wanted Bi-metallics........By Gionatha Ferrari, Italy I'm looking for the Bi-metallic Panda's from China in proof condition. The Royal Mint Hompage...By Martin Peeters, Netherlands The following message I saw on the Royal Mint (UK) Hompage: --Quote The Hong Kong Issue . Commemorating the hand over to Hong Kong to the Chinese Government after 100 years. The collection is a once in a lifetime issue which will be much prized by collectors worldwide. An esteemed historical treasure for generations to come, these final British rule sets - authorised by the Hong Kong government - crafted to both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated quality will undoubtedly become one of the most sought after issues ever. The special limited edition collections contain seven fascinating legal tender coins (one bi-metal and another two having traditional scalloped edges). The coins range in denomination from the ten cents to ten dollars. Gracing the obverse of each coin is the Bauhina Blakeana flower of the Hong Kong Orchid tree, Hong Kong's floral emblem. Inspired by centuries of Chinese folklore the reverse designs feature exquisitely detailed images of harmony, goodwill and prosperity. They include a traditional Chinese junk, the Ch'i Lin unicorn representing the offspring of virtuous rulers and wise administrators and the sacred Ox; signifying the coming of Spring or a new beginning For details of these special issues, contact the Royal Mint here. http://www.royalmint.com/coin/frameset.html --Unquote 14. WBCC Bi-metallic token comments...By Martin Peeters, WBCC Focal Point I've still got some comments from WBCC members about the WBCC Bi-metallic token: Kyle Mutcher, Canada: I recieved the WBCC medallions this past week. Thank you so much. They are beautiful, I like them alot. I plan to have one engraved soon, I just have to decide what I want to put on it. Thank you for the medallions, Great job. Kjetil Kvist, Norway: Yes, they were nice, I have found use the uniface - I'm placing a needle on the "faceless" side and will use it as a membership pin in the numismatic societies in Oslo. Ken Brown, Canada: The WBCC Bi-metallic is a very nice piece and a welcome addition to my collection. 21. The 1998 WBCC convention??...By Martin Peeters and Larry Friemel We both have toughts if there is a possebility to organisize in 1998 a "WBCC convention". One of the goals of this convention would be to meet other WBCC members from all over the world and also exchange knowledge about Bi-metallics. Because there are WBCC members from 20 countries it is impossible to get them together in one place. Now we have the idea to organisize a WBCC convention, in August 1998, in the United States of America. (Most of the WBCC members are from the US). Now we want to know what you think about this idea. Please let Martin or Larry know what you think about it. "See" you next week, Martin Peeters, Focal Point of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club martinp@concepts.nl
