WBCC Newsmail 45, Vol. 2, June 21, 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Composed with help of several members of the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club and published by Martin Peeters, The Netherlands, Focal Point of the WBCC, martinp@concepts.nl ------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear WBCC members, this week some very 'Hot" Euro news as announced in the this week sended "WBCC Newsflash". Further again Bi-metallic news from several WBCC members, enjoy it !! 1. "Hot" Bi-metallics Euro news.......By Martin Peeters, Netherlands This week the European Councel was together in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. On monday june 16th. the financial minister of the Netherlands, Mr. Zalm showed the new designs of the future Legal Tender Euro coins, who will replaces the coins of the EU countries in the year 2002. The decision about which countries who will join the European Currency will be in 1998. A week earlier the minsters of finance had to make a chose of 42 (!!) different designs who were in a competion. The winner of this competion was the Belgian Mr. Luc Luycx he is a coindesigner of the Belgium Mint. He has won about 30,000 US Dollars with his design. So on last monday the new Eurocents and Euros where shown. The dominations are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Eurocents and 1 and 2 Euro coins. The observe of the 1, 2 and 5 Eurocents dipicts a globe with the European side to the front. The observe of the 10, 20 and 50 Eurocents and the 1 and 2 Euros depicts a relief of a map of the curent European Union with their 15 states. The 1 and 2 Euro will be Bi-metallic !! The 1 Euro has in the Center a silver coloring and the ring is yellow-coper coloring. The 2 Euro has the opposite coloring. The reverse of all the Euro-cents and Euro-coins have not yet designed. The National Mint of all the EU countries get their own design. In the future there could be, depending on how many countries join the European Currency with their strict roules, 30 different pieces who could be Bi-metallic !! Attached with this WBCC Newsmail a picture (JPEG) of the future Bi-metallic 1 EURO. If you can't read the file, please look at the WBCC Homepage: http://www.Hlos.com.au/~rod.sell/WBCC.html 2. Monnaie de Paris production.......By Richard Giedroyc, Coin World, USA The WBCC newsletter 44 included a question by Larry Friemel regarding Monnaie de Paris production of the ringed Tri-metallic coins. I do not have information on the Tri-metallic production, but the following information appearing in the Oct. 9, 1991 issue of Coin World regarding their ringed Bi-metallic coins should be helpful. This information was given to me in an interview with Patrice Cahart, master of the Mint at that time. -- Quote The two-metal coin is struck in one operation at the Paris Mint, with the center portion locked into the ring by small holes in the ring which excess metal from the center expand into when the planchets are impressed with the coin design. The special ridges on its rim were meant for easy reading by electronic vending machines." The copper-nickel 10-franc coin was withdrawn from circulation and demonitized Dec. 31, 1986, after about two months circulation due to confusion with the half franc coin of the same size, weight and color. A shortage of 10-franc denominated currency followed as the new coin had also replaced the 10-franc note, which lost its legal tender status Sept. 15, 1986. The Mint master at the Paris Mint lost his job over the situation, ushering in current Mint Master Patrice Cahart's administration. -- Unqoute Cahart resigned his position at the Mint in early 1992. The ringed Bi-metallic 10-franc coin is still produced for France. 5. A new Encased Coin.........By Michael Shoemaker, USA I got a new (or at least uncataloged) US encased coin a few days ago. It is from the 1904 World's Fair. It is an encased 1904 penny. The ring seems to be aluminum. The obverse reads "KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE", which is inside a horse shoe, with a four-leaf clover at the bottom. The reverse reads "WORLD'S FAIR//19/04//SAINT LOUIS". This coin is in great condition. 6. A little (Bi-metallic) story............By Martin Peeters, Netherlands This week a Canadian colleaque visited the Shell Chemical Plant at Moerdijk, Netherlands where I use to work. This colleaque came to the Netherlands especially for a Chemical Plant we have. In a coffebreak I told him that Canada has the 2 Dollars Bi-metallic since 1996. He was surprisd I knew that. I showed him a couple of Bi-metallics from Portugal, France and Italy I have always in my pocket. I told him about the WBCC and he told me he lives near by one of three places in Canada (I knew Winnipeg) where the Canadian Mint struck there coins. He told me there are touristics tours at the Canadian Mint and there are blank Bi-metallics available. He promised me now, to send me some by airmail in about a week. Nice don't you think so? (Althought a blank Bi-metallic has no value at all, but nice to have in my Bi-metallic collection). 7. Question from WBCC member Daniel Shoemaker, USA I have a little favor to ask of you. I was wondering if there were and Bi-metallic gambling tokens in the US states of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas. Thanks for all your help! --Remark of the WBCC Focol Point of this subject: This answer I've got from Marv Weaver, USA: --Quote Tell Daniel that the only area that he has listed that I know has $10 (Bi-metallic) Silver Premium Gaming tokens is Mississippi. There are several casino's there. "THE GRAND" comes to my mind as I have a few from their myself. There are other's but since I don't collect outside Nevada any more I am not familiar with the other casino's there. Check out the following web site and ask Greg Susong via his E-Mail link. There are Casino's in Texas, Lousiana, and Mississippi. He has list of Chips for casino's there. He just might know about the Silver Premium Gaming Tokens. His site is located at: http://www.chipguide.com --Unquote 8.
