WBCC Newsmail 15, november 23, 1996 ----------------------------------------------------------- In this weekly Newsmail of the WBCC I have some bad news and some very good news about the Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club. First the bad news: The addiction from some members to the WBCC. Some of you (no, I will not place their names) are not so involved to the WBCC as it should be. I must strongly speak to them to get more involved so you must too must dive deeply into our hobby and take part of the WBCC. Now the good news: In the American Coin Magazin "Coin World" from november 15, there was an article (quarter of a page) about our Worldwide Bi-metallic Collectors Club. I have had this week reaction on this article and the result is new members with an Internet connection. 1. This Bi-metallic Token is from the little village "Albrandswaard" in the Netherlands. On the observe side there is a castle called "Valckestein" and the reverse there is the city-arms of the named village. 3. This chat page is courtesy of Earth Link and is not exclusive but one of 40 plus channels. Please use it, I guess only those interested in coins will stay. It is a java programme and should work as I have talked with 5 different users around the world on it. WBCC Chat Room: http://www.hotlinebbs.com.au/~rod.sell/chat.html Speak to you soon, Rod. 4. Newsflash...By Frans Dubois From the Israel Governnent Coins and Medals Corporation LTD. (IGCMC) I've got a letter that the Bi-metallic 10 Shekel Palm Three circulation coin and the Bi-metallic 10 Shekel Golda Meier circulation coin will NOT be issued in 1996. Only the Bi-metallic 10 Shekel 1996 with the Hanukka Lamp will be issued in a Mintset, like reported in Newsmail 14. 5. Members report....By Rod Sell I attended the coin fair this week. There was not a lot of Bi-Metallics however my friends all now know I am collecting Bi-metallics so they bring along what they find. I got a Canadian Token. The central plug is a Canadian 1 cent of 1950, King George VI on the obverse and the maple leaf and date 1950 on the reverse. The outer ring is in aluminium and enscribed JAS.A.OGILVY'S LIMITED - 84th BIRTHDAY on the obverse and JAS.A.OGILVY'S LIMITED - 84ieme ANNIVERSAIRE on the reverse. I also obtained a ROYAL AUSTRALIAN MINT/WELCOME TO CANBERRA trial token which some of the members already have. I spoke with the Mint officials who were at the fair on this item. It appears they were test pieces for the Bi-metallic issued in 1994. These test pieces were included in sample bags sold by the mint with other mint pieces. The mint officials will check into minting us some more for club members, so I will keep you informed when I have more details. 6. Taiwans Dollars or Yuan ?......By Joel Anderson, USA In answer to last week question about Dollars or Yuan. Dollar is the English translation of Yuan (at least according to the dictionary I use). In Taiwan the terms are apparently used interchangeably. The Standard Catalog of World Coins lists some coins of Taiwan and China- Republic as "DOLLAR (YUAN)". Since the Standard Catalog lists most Taiwan issues as "Dollars" I generally stick to that term. 8. Illegal.......................By Eugene Canham, USA I have found out that it is illegal to take the Algerian Bi-metallcs Dinars out of Algeria, that is why they are so hard to be obtain. Seems like it is considered smuggling and result is prison if caught. Still I have a few pieces of the Algerian Bi-metallics, when you want info please E-mail me: cherokeeflyer@msn.com (My brothers address) 9. The Wold of Bi-metallic catalog......By Martin Peeters Well in 7 days "The World of Bi-metallics" issue 13 is ready for distribution. There will be mayor changes in it. The catalog has now 4 sections: 1. The WBCC, the organisation, activities and all members are listed. 2. Overview Bi-metallic Coins 3. Overview Bi-metallic Euros and Bi-metallic Ecus 4. Overview Bi-metallic Tokens and Bi-metallc Medals. There is still much to do for me this week but it keeps me out of the pub. 10. The Canadian 2$ Piefort Bi-metallic (1).....By Frans Woons, Canada The following message I have got from the Royal Canadian Mint: Dear Ms. Woons, The $2 Piedfort Coin is made of a gold plated inner core inserted into a silver outer ring - yes it is two pieces. As for the Aviation Cameo series, although they potentially could be made via a simple plating process, they too are composed of two pieces - a gold plated cameo inserted into the silver body of the coin. Thank you for your interest, and for visiting the Royal Canadian Mint web site. 12. The Canadian 2$ Piefort Bi-metallic (2)....By Larry Friemel, USA. This week the postman brought my Canadian piefort and $2 set. It is a very nice presentation case with the coin and certification at the top and two uncut $2 bills in a large square plastic holder toward the middle-to-bottom. Other than the thickness which I believe is probably larger than the Israel coins, it looks very much like the earlier yellow gold/white gold coin released at the first of the year. However, this time, it is silver with a gold insert. Still very nice. At the time, I did not know I could buy the coin separately. The mint was only selling the set for $134 US; however, I have since seen advertisements in Coin World where dealers have split the two and are selling them separately. The coin for about $89 and the bill at what I would consider a very high price. If I would have known this I might have just bought the coin. Now the uncut $2 Canadian bills will join two uncut $2 bills I have from the United States mint. I think they will make an interesting conversation piece and if I believe any of the advertising hype may be worth more than the coin in the future. 13. I was down in Mexico last weekend and I was able to pick up a bunch of $10, $20, and $50 N. Peso specimens. I wasn't as successful as I hoped (dates and higher grade are limited), but I do have a number of circulated specimens I will be able to trade. I just need to do some catching up. One very interesting thing that you might ask the WBCC about... Are the error types exclusive to Bi-metalic issues? I landed an AU $50 N.Peso specimen where the copper-nickel (Cu-Ni)center was either off-center or over-sized. The Cu-Ni reverse is smaller than usual and oval or "out of round" and the obverse has Cu-Ni "overflow" below the legend, "Ninos Heros", and extending down below the bow in the wreath... overflow occurs from about 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock. This is a really cool specimen and a spectacular error... at least for me. Most errors aren't very apparent, but this one is striking. So, let me know what you and other's think. 15. Has anybody an idea to get members of these regions? Mail me: martinp@concepts.nl 17. 2 members less...........By the Focal Point of the WBCC Since many weeks it is not possible to get in contact with Larry Dodds, USA.(Getting messages return, no Internet connection anymore ?).
