Canada Huson Bay Co S.S. Beaver Medal Image from Cliff Anderson
Historical Canadian bimetallic -- Cliff Anderson
The old looking bimetallic medal above is a relic piece from the wreck of the S. S. Beaver. As indicated in the wording on
the piece, the steamship Beaver was built in 1835, apparently in England, and in that same year and then was credited as the first steamer in the Pacific. It was wrecked at Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1892. A companion piece (not pictured here) also indicates that the metal for the medals "was taken from the wreck of the S. S. Beaver, Santa Maria (ship) 1492 Columbus' ship." But no other information is given to explain that comment, though it seems to mean that the Beaver itself was made from material from the Santa Maria. (One hisorical source says that Columbus ran the Santa Maria aground off Cap-Haitien, Haiti, and the material from the wrecked ship went into the building of a fort there.) Additional information from any member concerning this medal is appreciated.·ece would be welcomed.
